An Orphanage and a Church, 6,000 Miles Apart

by Dr. Joshua Eldridge 23. February 2010 20:28

So there I was, standing in a group of Afghan children, wondering how I would break the ice, and I remembered the soccer ball in the truck.  Then came the perfect opportunity when the director of the orphanage asked the Padre and my Commander to tea, and I leaned in and said, “Ma’am, I’m going to go play some soccer.”  She smiled and said, “Sounds good.”

I got down on one knee with the kids and said, “Who likes futbol?”  Sure enough, every kid there followed me out to the truck and when I pulled out the ball, every little face lit up and some of them started jumping around and cheering.  You see, this is the first time that they’ve ever seen a new soccer ball.  Something that we see every day at Wal-Mart or Target, to them is the opportunity of a lifetime.  So I pumped up the ball and the game was on!  For half an hour we ran through the puddles, snow and mud kicking back and forth and having a good old time.  I even picked up the little kids like I do my daughter Breezy and ran around with them in my arms.  I wanted to make every child that I came in contact with feel special, because I was on a mission of love, not of war.

About two months ago I emailed my pastor, Arron Chambers, from Greeley Colorado and asked him if he would be willing to help out some kids in Afghanistan.  The thing with Arron and Journey Christian Church is they love people, and not just people that come into their doors. They love people regardless of ethnicity, color, or financial standing, and they even love people whose lives have been torn apart by war.  So Arron brought the congregation together and raised over $10,000 worth of clothes and shipping.  Their graciousness allowed me to experience one of the greatest days of my life.  I ran and played, put coats on little kids, put hats on infants, gave stuffed animals to the girls, gave a monster truck to a little boy who hadn’t smiled in months and watched his face turn from a permanent frown into the biggest smile that you have ever seen.  A little bit of love from a church 6,000 miles away touched the lives of 61 children and one grown, hardened soldier.

We gave away about half of the clothing that was sent over and the rest will be handed out over the next month as the teams travel out to more remote villages that have very little.   When I look back on my time in Afghanistan, I’ll not remember the long days or the hard times, what I’ll remember is 61 lives that were touched by the greatest giving country in the world and one of the best churches I have ever been apart.

Receiving the Army Achievment Medal

by Dr. Joshua Eldridge 3. February 2010 07:03

This is an email I received from my brother Josh:

I was awarded the Army Achievement Medal today. They gave it to me and a couple of my buddies for some of the high speed stuff we did before we deployed. Mine was for the 27 soldiers that I provided first aid to while in California. Most of them suffered from severe heat injury and some that just got sprained ankles and a few that had severe lacerations. So all in all pretty cool.

Christmas Greetings From Half A World Away

by Dr. Joshua Eldridge 18. December 2009 22:13

I never thought I would be spending another holiday away from the ones I love so much, but It's still a magical time, six thousand miles away.  I'll get to spend Christmas Morning opening presents with my kids, reading Luke 2 on Christmas Eve, and celebrating the magic of a day like none other (Even though most of it will be on Skype!).  You see, this year, I have a lot to be thankful for.  Sure I had to shut down a business, and not practice chiropractic for a while, but the things I got in return are priceless.  Let me share my Christmas Presents that I received this year:

This summer, I got to spend almost every day (except for July which was spent in the desert!) with my children.  Playing and laughing, loving and hugging...it was a dream come true every day.  Then at night, I got to go on dates with my wife and enjoy much needed quality time with the woman that takes care of me.

My son and I caught a two foot long, 10 lb (it's getting bigger every time I mention it) salmon out of the Puget Sound.  He reeled it in all by himself...fell down a few times but got it all the way on the beach all by himself.  I hope he remembers his first fish caught.  I know I remember mine, and it was no salmon!

I received four days of leave in October where every day was filled with family and fun.  We spent one night at a water park and played until we were exhausted, then got up the next day and did it again.  Uriah was a bit short for the big rides, but I snuck him in anyways and we both screamed like little kids all the way down the slide.

I've gotten to spend time with great people in a land that needs so much.  Most of the people dream of the day when they can walk down the street and not fear evil men lurking at every corner.  I have one friend here, Nabi, who has given himself not only to his country, Afghanistan, but also to the United States.  He has been blown up, shot at, and beat up; but everyday, he wakes up and goes out on convoys and tries to make his home a little safer for everyone else.  He has a dream to go to college in the United States.  Everyone, in every country, envies the freedom, education, and the safety that we have.  This is a great present, and one that I cherish deeply.

So this Holiday Season, Christmas and Hanukkah, I wish you the very best, and I hope you enjoy your time as much as I will enjoy mine.  Stafe safe, and may God bless you.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

A Tribute for a Hero

by Dr. Joshua Eldridge 20. November 2009 04:30

This is what I wrote in my journal on November 18, 2009.  Usually I don't share my journal entries, but I think it shows my respect:

Today I wonder if this will be a day that I remember for the rest of my life.  How does on man's sacrifice change lives across the world?  Today was Christopher Coffland's memorial service.  Seeing his close friends tell about a man, an exciting and full of personality man, who gave the ultimate sacrifice was amazing.

The first round in the 21 volley salute startles me, and taps breaks me.  Tears run down my face.  I'm sad, but I do not cry out of sadness.  I cry because I am so overwhelmed with pride, that a man would give up his life so that his nephews would not have to face war when they grow up.   I cry for the sacrifice of heros and the sacrifice of their families .

Thank you.

A Sad Morning

by Dr. Joshua Eldridge 15. November 2009 09:18

On Thursday morning, at 1016 local time, we lost one of our soldiers to an IED attack.  We put him on an  Air Force Jet home in a ceremony Friday morning as the sun came up.  It was a very sad morning.  It's pretty unbelievable that we have already lost a soldier and we've been here less than a month.

We'll have the memorial service Wednesday morning.  That will be a very tough time again.  We have alot of people flying in for that from all over the country so just keep them in your prayers.

The job my unit does is very dangerous.  I think our unit and our commanders got a very grim dose of reality this week.  Just keep all of our guys in your prayers... we need it.

What I'm up to...

by Dr. Joshua Eldridge 7. November 2009 09:07
So this is what I'm up to: I am not doing the job I trained for.  I actually feel very much over my head right now.  I'm co-ordinating 7 teams, 66 people, and a whole bunch of equipment that I have no clue what it does!  So, my learning curve is out of control right now,  and instead of being actually out there fighting the bad guys, I'm sitting at a desk...which is very hard for me!  I should be able to get out soon and visit my guys and learn some field work, but I have to argue and present my case to my captain in order to get it done.

So, that's what I'm up to... not very heroic, but I guess someone has to do it.  they are trying hard to keep me at my desk b/c if I'm not here and something goes wrong then I have to put out the fire.  I'm also responsible for some security stuff that I might have to travel out and give to people... but they don't want me to go... It's a constant battle to get out!

I don't know how the war is going... some people are very upset about the restrictions that have been put on us by the administration and the upper generals here, but I don't know.  I hope it works...we'll see.

It's been alot different here this time than when I went to Iraq.  I don't have the excitement and anticipation that I had when I went there... I was slightly depressed I think when I didn't have a job here and was being shuffled around...so that is different.  I had a clear objective last time and this time, not so much.  I guess now I do.  I kind of feel like I'm not really doing any good, so that probably adds to it.

Next Stop.... Afghanistan

by Dr. Joshua Eldridge 26. October 2009 22:40
I'm sitting in the USO at McChord Air Force Base waiting to depart on the next leg of my journey.  The last 8 weeks have been very busy full of very intense training.  I've learned the art of moving through the woods without making a sound and how to crouch down and disappear into the darkness.  We've fired our weapons and sat through enough power point presentations to last a lifetime!  One of the best parts of being in Washington was my family being close by.  We've spent at least one evening a week together enjoying each others company and loving on each other.  Then last week, I enjoyed a four day pass with the family here in the Seattle area going to an indoor water park, having a surprise going away party, a night at a bed and breakfast, and the saddest of all, saying goodbye.

Now we are leaving and it will be a long journey with three stops inbetween now and Afghanistan.  I am looking forward to getting the job done and coming home again.

On a chiropractic front, I've gotten to help many of the soldiers with their overworked muscles and joints.  It's tough going 8 weeks with no time off.  It wears not only on your body but also on your mind.  Bodies have a way of giving way after too much stress, but chiropractic has a way of giving these soldiers a much needed boost to their life!

Well, the next time  you hear from me, I will be writing from Afghanistan.  It's an exciting journey, and I can't wait to get it going....mostly because I want to get home!
